Pharmacology

In some cases, our doctors at Landreth Team Dentistry in Wichita may prescribe a prescription pain medication or antibiotic to help you prevent pain or an infection following your procedure. Please let our office know if you have any questions at all about your prescription.

Antibiotics

If you will be coming in for a dental extraction, dental implants, or another surgical procedure, our dentists prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection. An antibiotic may also be required for patients who have had a prosthetic joint replacement or a heart procedure and are scheduled for a surgical appointment.

Antibiotics may include:

·                     Amoxicillin

·                     Clindamycin

·                     Cephalosporin

·                     Azithromycin (Z pack)

·                     Augmentin

Pain Relief

In addition to prescribing an antibiotic, our doctors may recommend either an over-the-counter pain medication. If what you’re using isn’t relieving your pain, please call our office—we may be able to prescribe a stronger pain medication. Use all pain relievers as directed.

·         Acetampinophen (Tylenol)

·         Aspirin (Bayer)

·         Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)

·         Prescription pain reliever (Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Propoxyphene)

Steroids

Because some dental procedures can result in swelling, our doctors may prescribe a steroid medication for you to take as you recover. Steroids contain an anti-inflammatory that can help relieve the discomfort caused by swelling. It’s possible, though, that if you are taking medication for diabetes or high blood pressure, taking a steroid medication could trigger serious side effects. Please let us know beforehand what medications, if any, you might be taking.

Prescription Mouth Rinse

Taking care of your smile is always important, but especially after an extraction or some other dental procedure. To help patients care for their teeth and gums at a time when it may not be able to brush and floss as thoroughly as you normally would, we may prescribe a anti-microbial mouth rinse to protect oral health and promote healing.
