When a tooth and its root are lost, the portion of the jawbone associated with them will begin to atrophy or become reabsorbed. As this happens, the jaw becomes less dense, leaving patients with a jawbone that may not be strong enough to support dental implants. But with bone grafting it’s possible for our doctors at Landreth Team Dentistry in Wichita to restore lost density and improve appearance and functionality with dental implants.
A bone graft involves placing bone tissue into a weak spot in the jaw. This tissue is often taken from the patient’s own body—especially in the case of major bone grafting—but can also be taken from a tissue bank. Bone growth stimulants, meanwhile, can speed up the tissue integration process.
Overall, increasing bone density makes it possible to achieve success, not to mention restored appearance and functionality, with dental implants.
A sinus lift is a specific bone grafting technique that can be used to help patients become candidate for dental implants. As part of a sinus lift, bone tissue is added to the upper jaw. In some cases, patients may be able to undergo a sinus lift and implant placement in the same visit. Otherwise, the sinus lift will need to be completed first, with the implant placement following several months later, after the site has had time to mature.
In cases where a patient’s ridge has been reabsorbed, a bone graft will be necessary to restore ridge height and width. Without this procedure, the jaw ridge would be too thin to support conventional implants. By exposing the jaw ridge and grafting bone material onto it, patients may have enough density to qualify for dental implants in a few months’ time.
