After dental implant surgery

Pain, swelling, and bleeding are normal following oral surgery.  To treat swelling, a cold compress should be placed near the surgical site for 10 minutes at a time, with 5 minutes off, the day of your surgery. This will reduce the pain, swelling, and bleeding.

If the patient is experience pain or discomfort, medication can be taken as soon as the local anesthetic wears off. All medications, whether over-the-counter or prescribed by the doctor, should be taken as instructed. Avoid any pain medications you may be allergic to.

In the days following your procedure, do not raise your lips and probe the area with your fingers. Also, be careful about rinsing, spitting, or touching the area where you’ve had surgery, especially on the day of your procedure. Minor bleeding can be expected for the next 24 hours.

After surgery, you should also be sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, but avoid foods or liquids that are hot. Only soft foods and cool liquids should be eaten on the day of surgery. A normal diet can be returned to soon, unless we tell you otherwise.

And lastly, do not brush near the sutures. Taking care of your smile following surgery is important, but do so as directed by the doctor. Often, a special rinse will be prescribed to help patients clean vulnerable or tender areas. Use a directed. Warm salt water rinses (teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) should also be used at least 4-5 times a day, especially after meals.

After tooth extraction

For an hour following your extraction, place pressure on the gauze pad covering the extraction site. If bleeding continues, apply new gauze and pressure for an additional 45 minutes. Once a clot has formed, do not disturb or dislodge it. Avoid rinsing vigorously, sucking on straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, or brushing teeth in the area for about 72 hours. These activities can cause the clot to become dislodged or dissolve. Also, limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours, as this can increase blood pressure and cause more bleeding.

To prevent easy any swelling, hold a cold compress near the extraction site for 10 minutes and remove for 5. Repeat. Swelling typically subsides in 48 hours.

If you experience pain, use any prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed. If your medication isn’t working, call our office. Take any prescribed antibiotics exactly directed, even if signs of a possible infection have disappeared. Drink plenty of fluids and eat soft yet nutritious food on the day of your procedure. You can return to your normal diet as soon as you are comfortable.

Lastly, return to your normal dental routine after 24 hours. Brushing and flossing daily will help you keep your smile fresh and clean as it heals. If you experience any pain, bleeding, or swelling 2-3 days after your extraction, call our office immediately.

After multiple extractions

If you experience bleeding following your extractions, cover the affected area with gauze and apply pressure for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, apply a moist tea bag to the area for 30 minutes. Avoid hot liquids and physical activity, as they can cause bleeding to persist. If bleed don’t stop, call us immediately.

To help ease swelling, apply ice pack to the side of the face affected by the extraction. Do this for only the first 36 hours, and only while you are awake.

To ease any pain or discomfort, take an over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol or Advil. If prescription pain medication has been prescribed for you, take only as directed. If pain does not go away in two days, please give us a call. Patients who have been prescribed an antibiotic should finish their prescription, even if symptoms have vanished.

During your recovery, it’s also important that you drink plenty of fluids, especially water. But avoid rinsing your mouth until the second day following your procedure, when it is best if you rinse with salt water every four hours and especially after meals.

In the days following your procedure, avoid foods that could disturb the affect area. Eat only foods that are comfortable for you to eat. You’ll be able to return to your normal diet once your recovery is complete.
